Support for exclusively breastfed babies under 6 months

Please note: True constipation (ie not infrequent passage of normal stools or infant dyschezia with normal stools) is very rare in exclusively breastfed infants and can be a sign of an underlying medical condition. This should be considered a potential red flag that warrants review with your GP/ paediatrician, especially if in combination with insufficient weight gain or other symptoms/ signs

  • More common – CMPI, insufficient milk (ie low supply)
  • Less common – Hirschsprung disease, hypothyroidism, electrolyte disturbances, cystic fibrosis
