This creamy, protein-rich beef stroganoff is a delicious and nutritious family meal that’s perfect for both baby-led weaning and spoon-feeding. Made with iron-rich rump steak, gut-loving beef bone broth, and a nourishing sour cream sauce, it’s ideal for babies who have already started solids and are tolerating dairy.

Whether you’re serving this meal as soft strips of beef and mushroom for self-feeding or blending it into a smooth puree with pasta or rice, it’s a great way to introduce beef to your baby. Plus, it’s a wholesome dinner the whole family will enjoy—no need to cook separate meals!

Ingredients

800g rump steak, cut into thin strips
¾ tsp bicarb soda
2 tsp olive oil
½ tsp salt
A few cracks of pepper
1 large brown onion, thinly sliced
6 garlic cloves, minced
400g mushrooms, sliced
3 tbsp spelt flour or gluten-free flour of choice
2 cups beef bone broth
1 cup sour cream
1 tbsp butter
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

Method

  1. Start by marinating the sliced beef in the bicarb soda, olive oil, salt and pepper for about 15–20 minutes to help tenderise the meat.
  2. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large pan or pot and sear the beef in batches over medium-high heat, ensuring the pan isn’t overcrowded. Once browned, remove the meat and set aside.
  3. Add the remaining olive oil to the same pan, then sauté the onion and garlic until soft and fragrant. Stir in the mushrooms and cook until tender. Sprinkle the flour over the vegetables and stir through, allowing it to cook off slightly before adding the beef broth.
  4. Return the seared beef to the pan and let the mixture simmer until the sauce begins to thicken. Stir in the mustard, sour cream and butter, mixing gently to combine. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Serve warm over pasta, rice or mashed potatoes.

Baby-Friendly Notes
This meal is suitable once your baby is tolerating dairy. You can serve the soft beef strips and mushrooms as finger food for baby-led weaning, or simply mash or blend the stroganoff with a little extra broth for a smoother consistency. Offer with a familiar side, like mashed sweet potato or soft pasta spirals, for easy self-feeding.

Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: This meal freezes well—just portion into baby-safe containers or freezer bags and freeze for up to 3 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight or gently reheat on the stove with a splash of broth or water to loosen the sauce.
