Order nowThis French toast recipe is from our book Toddler to Table and is a versatile, easy-to-make meal that works for the entire family, from babies on solids (once tolerating egg and wheat) to adults looking for a wholesome, satisfying breakfast or snack. It’s the perfect way to use up bread that’s a few days old—no waste here! Plus, it’s a delicious and nutritious way to serve eggs, offering a great source of protein and healthy fats to fuel your little ones (and grown-ups!) throughout the day.
The beauty of this French toast recipe lies in its simplicity, flexibility, and the ability to pack it with nutritious toppings. By pairing the French toast with a homemade 3-seed chia jam, you’re not only adding natural sweetness but also boosting the fibre content. I always keep a jar of this chia jam in my fridge—it’s an incredibly versatile topping for everything from toast to yoghurt to pancakes!
For some extra protein, try serving the French toast with honey ricotta or yoghurt. Simply blend ricotta cheese with a touch of honey (for babies over 12 months) to create a creamy, naturally sweet dip that pairs perfectly with the warm, golden French toast. This is a great way to introduce dairy to little ones while adding more protein and calcium to their diet. The combination of the French toast, chia jam, and honey ricotta makes this meal a satisfying, nutrient-packed option that’s perfect for family breakfast, brunch, or even a filling snack.
Why It’s Great for BLW & Toddlers:
- Perfect for Self-Feeding: The French toast is soft and easy for little hands to hold, making it ideal for Baby-Led Weaning (BLW). It encourages self-feeding and helps develop fine motor skills.
- Balanced & Nutrient-Dense: Eggs provide a high-quality source of protein and healthy fats, while the bread offers fibre and complex carbohydrates to keep little bellies full longer.
This French toast is not just for babies and toddlers—it’s a delicious, family-friendly dish that’s sure to satisfy everyone, from young kids to adults. Whether you’re looking for a quick breakfast, a weekend brunch idea, or a healthy snack, this recipe is an all-around winner.

Serving Suggestions
For Variety: Try adding some mashed avocado, a side of scrambled eggs, or even a handful of spinach cooked into the French toast batter for an added veggie boost.
For BLW & Toddlers: Slice the French toast into strips or small pieces that are easy for little hands to grab. Serve with a small dish of 3-seed chia jam and honey ricotta for dipping (omit honey under 12 months) You can also serve the jam and ricotta on the side as separate spreads.
For the Whole Family: Serve the French toast with an array of toppings, like the 3-seed chia jam, honey ricotta, fresh fruit (bananas, berries, apple slices, peaches), or even a sprinkle of toasted coconut flakes for added texture.
Additional Tips:
- Vegan option: You can swap the eggs for a mixture of 2 tbsp ground flaxseed + 6 tbsp water for a flax egg. Use a dairy-free milk alternative and skip the ricotta for a vegan version.
- Make-ahead: You can prep the chia jam and ricotta in advance, and store them in the fridge for a few days. The French toast can also be made in bulk and reheated in a toaster or oven for quick breakfasts throughout the week.
