Flavour

Baby food doesn’t need to taste boring! Once your baby is used to the pure tastes of fruit and vegetables it’s time to start adding some flavour! Exposing your baby to strong flavours early on in their food journey will help promote a more mature pallet and less fussy kids – start with small amounts of flavour and work your way up.
Babies don’t need any salt, but you can add herbs, spices, garlic, ginger, turmeric, seaweed flakes and sauerkraut juice. Not only are these full of flavour, but nutrients also! Did you know parsley, coriander and turmeric are much more nutrient dense then kale!?

‘Food as medicine’ literally comes from the use of herbs!! We could all benefit from more. Try and use fresh ingredients where possible, and make sure for baby you chop very fine as they could pose a choking hazard.

All of my vegetable purées I thin with bone broth (for digestion) and will often enrich with a egg yolk or liver or sauerkraut juice. If roasting veggies I always roast in ghee or coconut oil as these healthy fats will help your little ones body absorb the nutrients!
You can adapt any of these ‘purées’ into finger foods for baby led weaning by steaming the vegetables with the flavour (aka steam a chunk of ginger with the beetroot and carrot) or sprinkle over vegetables cut into finger shaped pieces and oven roast!

Some of my favourite flavour combinations are listed below:

• Beetroot, carrot and ginger

• sweet potato and garlic

• chicken and thyme
• veggies dipped in sauerkraut juice
• seaweed flakes on zucchini/pumpkin/sweet potato
• pear and vanilla bean
• Apple and cinnamon

• sweet potato and pumpkin with cinnamon

• avo and coriander and/or paprika
• lamb and rosemary

• white fish and parsley
• salmon and dill

• Chicken and turmeric

• coconut and turmeric

• watermelon, banana and mint
