About the recipe
These soft-yet-chewy Banana Oat Teething Rusks are the perfect naturally sweet, sugar-free snack for teething babies—simple to make, gentle on gums, and made from real food ingredients.
These Banana Oat Teething Rusks are a naturally sweet, soft-yet-chewy snack designed to soothe sore gums and encourage confident self-feeding. Teething can be tough—for both babies and parents—and these simple homemade rusks are the perfect solution to keep little mouths busy while nourishing them at the same time.
Made from just a few wholesome pantry staples like oats and banana, they’re free from added sugar and firm enough for babies to hold and chew safely. The outside bakes to a gentle crust, while the inside softens as baby gums away—making them ideal for early teething stages. Unlike store-bought rusks, these are made with real food ingredients you can trust, and they double beautifully as a handheld snack for on-the-go moments.
Age Appropriate:
From 8 months+, especially once baby is confidently gumming foods.
Storage:
- Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Freezer: Not recommended — texture will become too soft after defrosting.
- Prep Ahead: The raw dough can be prepped and stored in the fridge for up to 4 days, then baked fresh as needed.
Ingredients
¾ cup rolled oats
1 small ripe spotty banana
1 tbsp coconut oil (melted)
¼ tsp ground cinnamon
Method
Preheat oven to 165°C fan-forced and line a baking tray.
Blend oats in a high-powered blender or food processor until they resemble flour.
In a bowl, mash banana until smooth, then stir in the oat flour, melted coconut oil, and cinnamon. Mix well.
The dough will be sticky! Place it between two sheets of baking paper and press or roll it out thinly.
Score gently into bar shapes using a knife.
Bake for 12–15 minutes until semi-firm to the touch — they will firm more as they cool.
Cool completely, then break into bars and serve.
