About the recipe

This easy base recipe for homemade gelatin gummies is perfect for babies and toddlers. With just two ingredients, it’s a simple way to make gut-loving snacks using breastmilk, purée, juice, or smoothies. A nourishing BLW-friendly treat that supports digestion and immune health.

This is the BASE recipe for making gelatin gummies, with the idea that once you know the ratio of gelatin to liquid, you can put your own spin on them and use whatever liquid you like!

The basic ratio is 1 TBSP gelatin : 100ml liquid.

So if you want to double/triple/quadriple this, you easily can.

2 TBSP gelatin : 200ml liquid
3 TBSP gelatin : 300ml liquid
4 TBSP gelatin : 400ml liquid

If you find you prefer a softer gummy, you can reduce the amount of gelatin to liquid ratio. 1/2 TBSP : 100ml liquid will provide a much softer gummy.

The texture of the liquid will also change the constituency of the gummy. A thicker liquid like a smoothie or coconut cream will yield a softer gummy than a thin liquid like apple juice.

You can even turn babies leftover puree into gummies for a fun finger food experience!

Why gelatin?

Gelatin has many benefits for your health, especially when it comes to gut and immune health. Adding gelatin to yours and your little ones diet can help strengthen the lining of your intestines. This helps protect your body from infections and illnesses. Gelatin also contains beneficial amino acids that are important for building a strong immune system, so it can help you stay healthy. For growing children, gelatin is an excellent source of nutrients like protein and collagen, which helps keep bones and muscles strong and healthy.

  • Saucepan
  • Refrigerator
  • Whisk or Spoon
  • Silicone moulds or glass container
  • 100 ml liquid of choice (basically any liquid/smoothie and even purée will work except: pineapple, kiwi and papaya.)
  • 1 TBSP gelatin

  1. Add chosen liquid to a saucepan and sprinkle over the gelatin

  2. Wait a few minutes and allow the mixture to ‘bloom’ - Blooming is the process of softening the gelatin before using to help it dissolve easily and avoid clumps of undissolved gelatin. It will look a bit wrinkly and thicken.

  3. Place the saucepan on a low heat and stir often until the gelatin is dissolved (should take a couple of minutes).

  4. Place into moulds of choice - you can use silicone moulds, glass containers or a container lined with baking paper. For young babies I like to set in a small glass rectangular dish then cut to safe finger sized shapes to serve.

  5. Refrigerate until set - atleast 2 hours usually. My tip here to prevent the mixture spilling on the way to the fridge out of the moulds, is to leave it on the bench for 10-15 minutes - it will semi set and make it easier to transfer

Notes:
They should last about 3 days in the fridge - they will freeze but they are a bit finicky with defrosting.

Ingredients

400ml liquid of choice (smoothies, milk, juice, purée*)
4 TBSP grass-fed gelatin

Method

Add the liquid to a small saucepan and sprinkle the gelatin over the top.

Let sit for a few minutes to ‘bloom’—it’ll look a little wrinkly and begin to thicken.

Gently heat the pan over low heat, stirring until the gelatin has fully dissolved.

Pour into silicone moulds or a glass container (lined with baking paper if needed).

Let cool slightly at room temp (10–15 mins helps prevent spills), then transfer to the fridge for at least 2 hours to fully set.

Once set, remove and store as needed.

*Note: Avoid pineapple, kiwi and papaya, as they contain enzymes that prevent the gummies from setting.
